چکیده

Cranioplasty is a commonly performed procedure following decompressive craniectomy. The patients are usually young earning persons and increasing cost of treatment is difficult to bear especially in low and middle income countries. A variety of options are available for cranioplasty ranging from autologus bone graft to xenograft and synthetic materials. Presently the autologous cryopreserved or subcutaneously preserved bone graft is considered as preferred choice but is has its drawback of bone resorption and infection . Custom made titanium implants and Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants using 3D printing technologies are also being used but its use is limited because of its high cost and lack of availability of this these technologies in the developing world which have maximum number of such cases. The authors present an easy and low cost technique for making customised cranioplasty implant by Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) using the craniotomy bone flap of the patient as a template.

Bone Resorption of Autologous Cranioplasty Following Decompressive Craniectomy in Children

Objective: In pediatric patients, autologous-bone assisted cranioplasty is preferred because the child’s original skull material will become reintegrated. Unfortunately, the replaced bone flap sometimes undergoes bone resorption, which results in structural breakdown necessitating reoperation. We report two children who underwent failure of autologous cranioplsty following decompressive craniec...

Decompressive craniectomy and early cranioplasty in a 15-year-old boy with N. meningitidis meningitis

BACKGROUND Intracranial hypertension is a well-known life-threatening complication of bacterial meningitis. Investigations on decompressive craniectomy after failure of conservative management are scarce, but this surgical treatment should be considered and performed expeditiously, as it lowers the intracranial pressure and improves brain tissue oxygenation. Early cranioplasty can further aid t...

Cranioplasty after Decompressive Craniectomy Caused an Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Case Report

Decompressive craniectomy is a common practice for patients with intracranial hypertension. Secondary rigid structural reconstruction following craniectomy can release the effects of atmospheric pressure on the brain, and the brain can become dilated. Although some cases with complications induced by cranioplasty, such as intracranial hematoma, have been reported, no clinical cases with intrace...

Timing of cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma

BACKGROUND The optimal timing of cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if early cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma reduces complications. METHODS Consecutive cases of patients who underwent autologous cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy for trauma at a single Level I Trauma Center were studied i...

Long-Term Incidence and Predicting Factors of Cranioplasty Infection after Decompressive Craniectomy

OBJECTIVE The predictors of cranioplasty infection after decompressive craniectomy have not yet been fully characterized. The objective of the current study was to compare the long-term incidences of surgical site infection according to the graft material and cranioplasty timing after craniectomy, and to determine the associated factors of cranioplasty infection. METHODS A retrospective cohor...
